PREFACE.

As the history of Cornish was nearing completion the writer became desirous of aid and counsel, and asked the town to appoint a committee for that purpose. The town kindly granted his request, and a committee, designated by himself, consisting of George L. Deming, Wilham W. Balloch and Fenno B. Comings was chosen. Their duties at first were examination of the manuscript and ascertaining cost of publication. The com- mittee having rendered a favorable report, on March 13, 1911, the following resolution was by vote adopted: "Resolved, That the town history committee appointed in March, 1910, arrange for the publication and sale of the Town History, and act with the historian in any matter pertaining thereto."

The committee have endeavored to be faithful in the dis- charge of all these duties, and the writer hereby takes pleasure in expressing his profound gratitude for all of their aid and cooperation.

GENEALOGICAL DEPARTMENT.

INTRODUCTION.

The genealogical record of the families of the town is not the least interesting portion of its history.

"If you would know who you are, Learn whence you came."

Genealogical study is regarded by most as dry and unprofitable, but this is due to misapprehension of its importance. One author declares that "the keeping of family records is a criterion of the difference between worthy fami- Hes and all other kinds." Sure it is, that with few exceptions the illustrious and honorable can trace their ancestry back for generations. Believing in the law of hei'edity, they have been, and still are, increasingly inspired with an ambition to sustain the honor of their family name. Such, carefully preserve their records, while others are indifferent about the matter. The goodness of a family depends more on the number of its generations than on any other condition.

We regret that our record of the families of Cornish is so incomplete. It was purposed from the first to include that of every family that ever became permanently resident of the town. It was a colossal undertaking under the circumstances. Had every family preserved their full data of events, and, upon call, have forwarded us a copy of the same, the task, though great, could have been accomplished much easier and quicker.

The records of a large number of families are broken and lacking much important data, but this is unavoidable for several reasons. Quite a number of famiUes who once lived in town evidently moved away, leaving no posterity behind them. Other families once prominent in town, have here become extinct, and their descendants are scattered world-wide and beyond our knowl- edge. We have been enabled to find many of them, but the larger portion is still unknown. This accounts, in a measure, for the incompleteness of the work.

The material for these genealogies has been obtained from town records, inscriptions from cemeteries, family records, church records, old writings, besides extensive correspondence and interviews.

These authorities often fail to agree on dates of events. As there can be but one date for the same event, we have elected the one most probable and have marked it uncertain (?).

Thus the difficulties of this compilation have been many, but these must make the value of the work more apparent.

The plan has been to give the line of descent from the earliest known ances- tor to the first settlement of the family in town, and from that time to give as

full a record as possible to the present, pro\'ided the family continues to remain in town. In case they remove, the children, and, in some cases, the grand- cliildren of natives are given though born out of town.

From the nature of the case the work of the genealogist is never complete. Changes are constantly occurring. If up-to-date yesterday, today brings a change that the record will not show.

With aU these considerations and lack of perfection, the compiler takes pleasure in showing the following results: About 250 family names, over 1,000 families and nearly 10,000 individual names.

Many famihes have apparently taken a deep interest in this work, and have rendered all the aid in their power to further it. To these especially, and to all others who have contributed to the success of this work, we tender sincere thanks.

BARTLETT.

Among the tombstone records of Cornish is that of Dea. John Bartlett, who was b. in 1727, and d. June 8, 1797. By his side are the remains of his wife, Jemima Downer, who was b. in 1732, and d. Aug. 17, 1818. The records also show that during the early years of the town Mr. Bartlett was a prominent man, as his name frequently appears among town affairs. Unfortunately the genealogist has been unable to determine who his posterity have been, yet by the census of 1790 it is shown that he then had two sons over sixteen years of age and also two daughters.

The other Bartletts of Cornish all trace to a Samuel Bartlett, said to be a contemporary of Dea. John; yet his name does not appear in Cornish in the census of 1790, and we have no records showing any relationship between these two men. It may be doing an injustice to the records and memory of Dea. John Bartlett to drop his name as an ancestor, and give to Samuel Bartlett the credit of the worthy citizenship of the name in Cornish, but their family records, as far as known, all trace to him as their ancestor.

1. Samueli Bartlett, descended from Puritan stock which early came from Eng. to America. He came to Cornish during its early history and settled on Dingleton Hill, on a farm since owned and occupied by Philander Williams. Feb. 22, 1828. The following brief sketch of these ancestors by Fred A. Dean, Esq., we insert here :

"The Burrs came to Grantham to settle several years before the Revolu- tion. They settled in that part of the town since set off into Cornish.

"They cleared a farm, and generation after generation lived and died on the old farm. After more than 125 years of ownership, and occupation, it jsassed out of the family keeping into the hands of others.

"From that old farm one of the Burr boys went to fight a king that a nation might be born. Great-grandmother Burr came all the way from Haddam^ Conn., to Grantham, N. H., on a pack horse. Came up the Connecticut river to old Fort No. 4 and on to Windsor, Vt., thence over the hills to their new-made home in the wilderness. The story of their life and hardships I need not write. It was the life of all who go ahead to hew out honors and institutions for the generations that come after them. It takes brave men and women to be pioneers.

"They must sow that others may reap, suffer that others may gain, and labor that others may have a life worth living."

CHASE.

Aquillai Chase, b. in Conway, Eng., in 1618, was the honored ancestor of all of this name who have ever lived in Cornish. With two of his brothers he came to America in 1639, and settled in Hampton. He m. Ann Wheeler, rem. to Newbury, Mass., in 1646 and d. there Dec. 27, 1670. They had eleven children.

Their youngest son, Moses^, sometimes called "Ensign Moses," was b. Dec. 24, 1663. He hved and d. in Newbury. He m. Nov. 10, 1684, Anne Follansbe. They had nine children. Their eldest son Daniel' was b. Sept. 20, 1685; m. Jan. 2, 1707, Sarah March. Rem. to Sutton, Mass., about 1730, and d. there April 17, 1768, aged 83. They were the parents of ten children. Three of their sons: Samueb, Caleb** and Moses*, with their families settled in Cornish. Some of them came at the time of settlement of the town in 1765 and others soon followed. A few representative men of other families joined them in the work and hardships incident to the new settlement.

At this time, and for many years following the Chase family were more num- erous than any other in town, and their influence of course, correspondingly large. Most of them were possessed of minds "not born to serve, but rule." Their motto, "Ne Cede Malis" (yield not to difficulty), was fully exemphfied in their history as pioneers of Cornish, and that in a marked degree. But like other families, many of their records have been irrecoverably lost. Had the early settlers preserved them, it would have enabled the genealogist to have done ampler justice to the memory of those of whom we have just reason to be proud.

*Doubts have arisen that Caleb* ever lived in town, yet some of his children became residents, as the records show. (See Caleb branch.)

Born September 28, 1707, and died August 12, 1800, at Cornish, N. H.

He was the first justice of the peace in town, and as such, called the first town meeting. He was the first moderator, also the first selectman in town for many years. He retained his physical and mental vigor to a remarkable degree, for, although about seventy years of age, he went with the regt. of his son. Col. Jonathan Chase, to Saratoga and Bennington in the autumn of 1777. He afterwards figured conspicuously in the "New Hamp- shire Grants Controversy" as the records abundantly show. His name appears in connection with nearly all public gatherings and documentary transactions in town for several years. He was one of the judges for the Co. of Cheshire, wliich at that time included all the present terri- tory of Sullivan Co.

After the death of his wife, Mary, in 1789, it is said he again m. In his will, executed Aug. 2, 1794, he made a bequest, "To Ester: my dear and loving wife. Sutton, Mass.; m. Aug. 23, 1753, Alice Corbett of Mendon, Mass., b. in 1732.

If the honor of being the first settler in Cornish belongs to any one individual more than another it would seem that Dea. Dudley Chase can claim it. At the age of 35, in the strength of manhood and possessed of the spirit of enterprise and a desire to provide ample means for his already numerous family, he, with others, was the first to make a clear- ing in the wilds of Corni-sh. (See Settlement of Cornish for particulars.)

Eight children were b. to this couple before coming to town and seven afterwards. The first white child b. in town was their ninth. In many respects this was a remarkable family. Fourteen of the fifteen children grew to maturity and filled useful and even brilliant positions in life. Five of the sons were educated at Dartmouth College, while the entire number sought and acquired high degrees of scholarly attainments.

The modern student may well query: How did they? How could these young men be prepared for college under such circumstances? There were then no "Lessons in Latin made easy," no "Enghsh Notes," no "Ponies," but the boj^s just dug their way through with a determination that would astonish many a modern student, because filled with high aspirations and with the gladness of a pure and happy youth, all diffi- culties were overcome.

All this was about seventy years before the first railroad car steamed up the Connecticut valley, crossing the farm once theirs, that brought the modern paraphernalia that is called Advanced Civilization.

The relation of a circumstance here may be of interest to many. In 1780 Deacon Chase began to consider ways and means for providing his family with homes for themselves. Being "well-to-do," he proposed to invest in more land. He therefore started out to explore the west branch of Wliite River in Vermont.

He made the journey on foot and alone. Late at night, weary and hungry he made his camp in the unbroken forest, at a point near the present site of Christ's Chm-ch in Bethel, Vt. He found a convenient stone for a pillow and there spent the night. He.feU asleep, and, like Jacob of old, dreamed a similar dream. He interpreted this as a token that he had found the land that he was seeking. Upon awakening and resuming his search, he saw that the meadow lands up the branch were fair and fertile. He therefore concluded to make an extensive purchase of land, and named it Bethel and the western part Gilead, and Bethel- Gilead it has been unto this day.

Several of his family and their children subsequently settled in Bethel, being the first settlers of that town.

Deacon Chase and wife, however, never removed their home from Cornish, but each hved to an advanced age. After her death- which occurred Sept. 13, 1813, he at times conceived himself away from home and would piteously beseech his family to take him home. Still, at times, he would visit his wife's grave with unclouded reason, and he caused this couplet to be inscribed on her tombstone :

"An angel's arm can't snatch me from the grave, Legions of angels can't confine me there."

He svu-vived her but a few months, dying April 13, 1814. On his tombstone is written:

"This is the way to immortahty."

Some of its branches have been well preserved, but the greater part appear to be covered in the shades of the past. It has been supposed that he and his family came to town soon after his brothers came, and possibly lived and died here. Yet neither his, nor his wife's, name appears on any tablet in the cemeteries of the town, and the proportion of the marked graves of this branch of Chases being less than that of his brothers, leads one to think that his large family largely scattered away from town.
